Parks maintenance and litter

If you find that a park’s litter bin is full, please take your litter home with you as not all parks bins are emptied daily.

During periods of exceptionally good weather, the volume of litter generated in parks increases enormously. Our staff will continue to empty the bins according to their regular schedule and in exceptional times we will endeavour to increase our litter picking operatives on a temporary basis, but with over 100 open spaces to manage, we would sincerely appreciate the public’s understanding and support in helping us to keeping our parks clean and well presented by disposing of their litter sensibly and preferably at home.

Large plastic and glass bottles, and drinks cans should be recycled and these, together with pizza boxes and other fast food containers, take up an inordinate amount of space in our bins which can fill very quickly in times of great demand.

The Greenspaces team underwent a restructure in 2011 as part of a council-wide cost saving exercise. This means we have fewer staff on the ground in parks and as such we have had to prioritise how our parks are managed, particularly in relation to grass cutting and litter picking commitments.
