Sunday Trading Act 1994

Regulatory Reform (Sunday Trading) Order 2004

The Regulatory Reform (Sunday Trading) Order 2004 came into effect on 27 February 2004.

The Order removes the requirement on large shops (internal floor area of over 280 square metres) in England and Wales to give prior written notice to Local Authorities of their intended Sunday Trading hours or to notify any changes to such hours previously notified to the Authority.

The Order also removes the requirement on Local Authorities to maintain a register of such premises and their opening hours on Sundays.

Occupiers of such large shops will still be required by the Sunday Trading Act 1994 to display their Sunday trading hours (a maximum period of 6 continuous hours between 10am and 6pm) both within and outside of the shops. Local Authorities will still have a responsibility to enforce compliance with the Act.

The Regulatory Reform Order also repealed the restriction on the sale of methylated spirits between 10pm on Saturday and 8am on the following Monday. This repeal only applies in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
